The Boss LM-2 Limiter was the first limiter to be released by Boss. While the Boss CS-2 was able to squash the players dynamics, the LM-2 functioned by limiting the peaks of the signal and thus taming the unwanted outlying tones. 
 
The LM-2 was most popular with bass players, and Boss only released specialized bass limiters after they discontinued the LM-2. The LM-2 remains a very popular and very useful pedals for those who want some control over their dynamics without the overwhelming squash of a compressor.
